About Me

I grew up in Michigan. I spent most of my life there, studied and taught at the directional Michigan Universities (Central, Western, Northern), and eventually moved to Iowa in order to pursue my Ph.D.

During my time in Iowa City, I traveled abroad a bunch of times, often using academic work as an excuse to go. Apart from traveling, I love coffee and have worked in a number of cafes over the years, achieving the title of "Master Barista." I'm still pretty obsessed with coffee, and I frequently miss making it. Luckily, I love philosophy enough to keep me busy.

In addition to coffee, I've worked as a pastry chef*, a sous chef*, line cook, prep cook, server, and bartender. I enjoyed tending bar most of all, and spent a lot of my free time in Iowa City doing just that.

I'm also quite into tattoos and tattoo culture. I currently have twenty-seven tattoos, and have plans to get many more. They're great.


*When I use the term, "chef" I'm including the asterisk because I am not formally trained in either pastry or cooking. I was elevated to these positions by necessity rather than formal education.
